Xiaomi Mi 9 Review – The Cheapest Snapdragon 855 Phone

Xiaomi launched their famous 9 series earlier this year, then a new model called “Xiaomi Mi 9” introduced in Jun soon became the Cheapest Snapdragon 855 Phone in 2019.

Remember last year? Xiaomi has Pocophone which made a huge splash in the smartphone market. People were so surprised that a budget phone could have a Snapdragon 845 chipset with the lowest price in the market.

This year, Xiaomi Mi 9 is the same. It makes the other competitors’ prices look a bit over-priced to me.

Let’s follow Blablaphones for a better review of MANY fun time! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Design & Display

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE and Xiaomi Mi 9 both come with a dot drop design where houses the selfie camera for a bigger screen experience.

It’s similar to Samsung’s “infinity-U” or “infinity-V” design we see much for Samsung Galaxy A series in 2019. They all try the best to leave more room for the display. Then, we all could get the premium cinematic experience.

So, I love to see this trend wide-spreading from this Android smartphone to another, although they called it in different ways.

On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 9T looks nice and neat for a full-screen experience due to its motorized pop-up camera.

All three phones are gracefully curved in the rectangle display with round corners.

(The screen on Xiaomi Mi 9T is great without any notch or hole-punching, although there is still a thin chin on the bottom.)

Not sure whether the most customers for Xiaomi is Chinese locals, so the design and the colors on the back of Xiaomi Mi 9T remind me Chinese dragon or kirin, especially Red Flame! 🙂 🙂 🙂

The color on the back of Xiaomi Mi 9 and Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is called “holographic spectrum design”. It will reflect different colors when you flip it around.

It’s a step further than gradient design since all competitors are creating many gradient colors, Xiaomi is being one of the pioneers for holographic design.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE and Xiaomi Mi 9T have the similar triple camera set, and the only difference between two phones is Xiaomi Mi 9 SE’s third camera doesn’t have 2x optical zoom which I am fine with.

Xiaomi Mi 9 is equipped with a better triple camera set with more pixels: 48.0 MP(wide) + 16.0 MP(ultrawide) + 12.0 MP(telephoto, 2x optical zoom).

124.8º wide-angle camera

This 124.8º wide-angle camera tops Samsung’s 123º on the Galaxy S10 family. It could also work with AI correction to prevent any surprise for any shots.

With 4 times pixels than the current flagships in the market, you could take the super-wide photo first then crop it as much or as little as you want.

I think the result is great since Xiaomi level up the pixels by 4 times and the photo still looks so vivid after cropping.

(Xiaomi Mi 9T has a 124.8º wide-angle camera is perfect for cropping!)

Pop-up Selfie Camera

With Xiaomi Mi 9T’s motorized pop-up camera, everyone could fit in for a group selfie without worry much that someone’s body or head got cut!

Xiaomi has beauty modes for anywhere you want to beauty up! A piece of great news is that Xiaomi will work with Meitu to produce a smartphone with real-time beauty modes.

PS. Meitu is a giant application company in China which is known for Meitu App that allows people to adjust anything on their body width or eyes enlargement etc…

They announced that they will not make their own smartphone since 2019 and Xiaomi will manufacturer phones for them with their photo adjusting software.

(You don’t need to worry about someone’s body or head got cut by Xiaomi Mi 9T’s pop-up camera for a perfect group selfie.)

107 scorings on Dxomark(Xiaomi Mi 9)

(Xiaomi Mi 9 scores 107 on Dxomark Smartphone chart, it’s currently top 8.)

Review shortcut to Dxomark:

-Photo-

  • Pros: accurate exposure, white balance, and autofocus
  • Cons: noise in a low-light environment and unnatural tone compression effect for high-contrast shots

-Video-

  • Pros: Excellent detail in bright light and good stabilization in most situations
  • Cons: Some ghosting and dropped frames and noise in low-light scenes

The Cheapest Snapdragon 855 Phone

Samsung Galaxy S10 series’ price starts from USD$749.(Samsung Galaxy S10e).

LG G8 ThinQ’s price starts from USD$819.

Sony Xperia 1’s price starts from USD$950.

OPPO Reno’s price starts from USD$570.

Xiaomi Mi 9T‘s price is now USD$323 or less in various e-commerce platforms, you could check this out by yourself!

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 9T has a 4,000mAh battery, and since it has Snapdragon 855 chipset, it could last longer than you imagine.

I like to mention ASUS Zenfone 6’s 5,000 mAh battery which tops all the flagships phone in 2019 so far. But ASUS will soon release ROG Phone II in Aug 2019 which equips with a 6,000mAh battery.

I would be very excited to see larger batteries that come with new flagships in the near future to ensure we eventually leave power bank or the type-c charger at home!

Other Minor Features

  • on-screen fingerprint unlock: using an optical module for a 25% faster unlocking process
  • IR Remote: to connect all Xiaomi AIoT smart home appliances with your phone
  • Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 & 6 made for a better protection

Downsides

Top#01 No IP rating

Since Xiaomi Mi 9T gets a motorized pop-up camera, it won’t get much water-resistant like other flagships in the market.

You might need to be more careful for any occasion that you might splash liquids on your Xiaomi Mi 9T.

Scuba diving? Definitely NO!

Let’s watch a video of Xiaomi Mi 9 waterproof testing:

Top#02 Motorized pop-up camera

The best part of Xiaomi Mi 9T is Xiaomi brings the full-screen experience for all of us, but I kind of worry the lifetime for this pop-up camera?

Xiaomi mentioned it could be used for 300,000 times. So averagely, if you use it for 10 times a day, it should be ok to last 82 years. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Another concern is the pop-up camera must bring some dust into the phone when it rotates back to the body. Hmm…it seems this is inevitably happening without any solutions.

Top#03 The depreciation

I see quite often people tend to buy iPhone 7 & 7plus or iPhone 8 instead of going directly for Xiaomi Mi 9 series in the condition that Xiaomi Mi 9‘s specs are way better than iPhone 7 & 8.

They all mentioned that if they are going to re-sell again for their phones, they couldn’t get a better price with Xiaomi Mi 9 series due to the lower price of Xiaomi product lines.

But, they could bargain a great price with iPhones, so it comes back to the brand strategy instead of the thinking from end-users.

Conclusion

Xiaomi Mi 9 series are three great phones with the latest specs for a perfect photo, a better cinematic viewing experience, and a great overall performance. Xiaomi MI 9 is indeed the Cheapest Snapdragon 855 Phone in 2019.

People tend to think Xiaomi is still the one smartphone manufacturer that creates many budget phones for the cheap phones’ market share.

But, in 2018 & 2019, Xiaomi launched smartphones more expensive than before which are still lower than USD$1000 as other flagships did.

They were amazingly good for daily use and make your life easier with all the smart home appliances if you have. So, I personally will go for Xiaomi Mi 9T among the three. 🙂 🙂 🙂
