OnePlus 7 Pro Review – The Flagship Killer

One Plus is always launching the best budget phone with the almost-perfect specs that could compete with all other flagships in recent years, that’s the reason why people call it “The Flagship Killer“!

This year, OnePlus first launched OnePlus 7 Pro in May and OnePlus 7 in Jun. OnePlus 7 Pro received many good reviews based on each testing and many famous Youtubers highly recommend and switch to OnePlus 7 Pro eventually.

I love that OnePlus is no longer a symbol of “Budget Phone” but a new rising star in the flagships market.

Let’s follow Blablaphones for a better dive! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Design & Display

The appearance of OnePlus 7 Pro is so nice and neat. With a motorized pop-up camera, OnePlus finally has a phone that comes with notch-less design and ultra-thin bezels.

It gives a premium cinematic experience that everything you do on OnePlus 7 Pro such as texting, watching youtube videos, or playing games.

90Hz frame rate

OnePlus 7 Pro equips with a 90 Hz frame rate which makes the screen brighter and better contrast. Each tap on the screen, you will find it’s like magic to deliver a nicer and smoother experience.

I like this screen so much compared to other phones’ screens. If you go for this phone and use it, it’s difficult to notice this amazing screen with 90hz frame rate.

But, if you use OnePlus 7 Pro for a while then go back to other phones, you will find a huge gap and cannot help to buy OnePlus 7 Pro immediately.

On the other hand, OnePlus 7 looks like other competitor’s mid-ranger but much more powerful inside. It gets a water-drop design on the front which houses the selfie camera.

You may call it “Infinity-U” or “infinity-V” design by Samsung’s words which we saw much similar design on Samsung Galaxy A series in 2019.

OnePlus 7 Pro is made by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, but for OnePlus 7‘s front is made by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 while the back is Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

It’s good to see that OnePlus 7 does have a better design change instead of using not-so-good(lower cost) materials for the lower price.

Camera

OnePlus 7 Pro gets 48.0 MP(wide & OIS) + 8.0 MP(Telephoto) + 13.0 MP(ultrawide), a triple camera set which scores 111 in Dxomark Smartphone chart.

It’s not rare that flagships have a triple camera set in 2019 since Huawei P20 Pro launched in early 2018.

Ultra-Wide Lens

OnePlus 7 Pro has a 117º ultra-wide camera for you to take a scenic photo with ease. It could be fully used when you go to the mountains or beaches with your friends and family.

Compared to Samsung’s 123º ultra-wide camera, OnePlus 7 Pro seems just a bit less, but the result is as wonderful as Samsung Galaxy S10 series.

3x optical zoom

Oppo Reno has a 10x hybrid zoom. OnePlus 7 Pro, which is the subsidiary company of OPPO, also gets a 3x optical zoom. (exactly 2.87x!)

It’s great to take pictures that are far away which you cannot see clearly or some signs outside a shop or buildings.

This reminds me of Google Pixel 3‘s super res zoom feature, but Google uses its powerful software enhancement to make photo still look clearly when you zoom in and crop as you like.

Nightscape

OnePlus 7 Pro could also take night photo as other competitors do. For the result, it’s no way to compete with Google Pixel 3 since it gets the most advanced algorithm for the best performance.

But, I still love to see all Android smartphone manufacturers try to create their own night mode/sight/scape for us to try night photos.

There are more choices in 2019 for you to take a GREAT phone for any night photos, and they all deliver a lot better result than ever.

Pop up Selfie camera

This is the most important reason why OnePlus 7 Pro could make a full-screen experience came true.

It gets 16.0 MP to capture your beautiful face, and both rear and front camera is with many features that other competitors do. The concept is like OPPO Reno and ASUS ZenFone 6 that both use flip cameras for more screen space.

For example, Portrait mode which we see the best falls on iPhones, bokeh effect that we see much on Samsung’s Live Focus.

OnePlus 7 Pro’s triple camera set has all the features as other competitors do and it also performs very well!

Dxomark Scorings

(OnePlus 7 Pro gets 111 scorings on Dxomark, and it’s currently Top#4 on the smartphone competition.)

Review shortcut by Dxomark:

-Photo-

  • Pros: details preserved for all conditions and accurate autofocus & exposure
  • Cons: Visible noise for indoor images and desaturated color in zoom shots

Video-

  • Pros: Well-preserved detail in all conditions and effective stabilization
  • Cons: Coarse noise on moving subjects in low light

Night Mode on 90Hz Screen

The night mode of OnePlus 7 Pro is stunning. Its screen protects your eyes from eye-strain and filters out blue light that would harm your eyes automatically.

The OnePlus 7 Pro’s AMOLED screen was also awarded a certification by the VDE Institute, ensuring a healthy and comfortable viewing experience for all of us!

PS. VDE is one of Europe’s largest technical-scientific associations and it tests covers safety, EMV, energy efficiency, and other product features, as well as certification and assembly inspections.

On-screen Unlock

Every strong competitor has the on-screen unlock technology. Samsung has its ultrasonic fingerprint technology to make a more accuracy and speedy unlocking experience.

OnePlus is using Optical fingerprint scanners for the same game. OnePlus mentioned it takes only 0.21 seconds to unlock your OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7 Pro if you simply press your finger on the screen.

Compared to the previous sensor in OnePlus 6T, it gets 38% faster in OnePlus’s 7th generation.

Battery

OnePlus 7 has a 3,700 mAh and supports fast charging 20W, while OnePlus 7 Pro gets a 4,000 mAh and supports 30W fast charging.

For battery, OnePlus has its own technology called “Warp Charge” which takes you 20 mins to be ready. It reduces the time you are tied down due to lack of battery, and you could leave your power bank at home after you get OnePlus7 Pro.

I need to mention the largest battery I saw in not-gaming phones in 2019 which is ASUS Zenfone 6’s 5,000 mAh battery.

It might not come to you when you think of smartphones, but ASUS did a great job this year with a super larger battery and an almost stock Android interface.

Other Minor Features(OnePlus 7 Pro)

  • Dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos: sound loud & better
  • Haptic Vibration Motor:  enhances your experience by allowing you to interact with your phone more
  • Fnatic mode: a mode that eliminates all distraction when you play games

Downsides

Top#01 Need more time for Oxygen OS

Oxygen OS is OnePlus’s OS system. If you are only familiar with iOS or Stock Android, you might need more time to get used to Oxygen OS.

There is NO support to cloud sync service if you are in China, but it’s ok for overseas users if you download all Google apps in your phone.

Top#02 Personal Privacy Issue

I know it’s a cliche that all Chinese smartphone companies will eventually work for its country, to expose all the users’ data to the government. But, there is no proof that could show any pieces of evidence on this concern so far.

Just keep this in mind, OnePlus’s mother company is OPPO which is the Top 4 smartphone manufacturer in China. If you care about personal privacy so much, I suggest you go for iPhones or Google Pixels.

Top#03 No IP rating

Since OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a motorized pop-up camera, it doesn’t have a waterproof feature. So, you cannot splash your coffee at breakfast or drinks in the bar on your OnePlus 7 Pro.

For this issue, OnePlus gave back a strong response. They first posted a new video to show us that OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro are both water-resistant without IP ratings.

(Products not IP certified. Water-resistant under optimal testing conditions. OnePlus makes no guarantees regarding water/liquid resistance. Water/liquid damage not covered under product warranty.)

Conclusion

OnePlus 7 Pro is indeed a GREAT phone and a very strong competitor in the flagship market. It gets a powerful three-camera set and a long-lasting battery which really makes it “The Flagship Killer”!

It gets a Snapdragon 855 chipset and guarantees the overall performance, not to mention all the minor things which make this phone so perfect!

  1. Thank you for this nice review, I always like reviews about phones and gadgets. I think the OnePlus 7 Pro is budget-friendly and has great features.

The 4000mah battery capacity is such a great deal and the camera pixel is cool too. I will get one in the coming weeks and will surely share my experience of it with you on here.

    • Hi Charles,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your honest feedback here, if you need more comments of OnePlus 7 Pro, you are welcome to read more HERE. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  2. Hi Martin,

Can you comment a little more on the battery life of the OnePlus 7? I’m currently using an iPhone 6 Plus (I usually get my wife’s old phone when she upgrades).

I’m now on my third battery and looking down the barrel of a fourth. I believe Apple came under scrutiny because of the manner in which their updates impacted the battery life of older iPhones.

So, I’m over it, and it’s time to look for a new phone, which annoys me because this phone serves me well except in terms of battery life.

Functionality is important to me, but not as important as making certain the battery lasts at least a full day.

    Cheers,

    Henri

    • Hi Henri,

Compared to the previous generation of OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 7 Pro got upgraded with 4,000mAh from 3,700 mAh. It’s mainly due to the larger, higher-resolution screen, and the world-famous 90 hz refresh rate.

You could turn the screen on for non-stop 5.5 hours, so I think it’s enough for me since I only use the phone around 2-3 hours a day. It’s better we know our habits while using the phone on our hands then purchase the perfect one! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  3. Great review Matt,

As much as I hate to admit it, I spend most of my time on the phone nowadays as I’m always on the move. I read articles, do emails, and play games on the phone and lately, it’s giving me headaches which I think might be due to the blue light radiating from it.

But most importantly, the Fnatic mode, wowzers! I just hate it when notifications keep popping up whenever I’m in the game, does the feature also block incoming calls as well?

    • Hi Riaz,

Some details of Fnatic mode taken from the official website :

Enabling Fnatic mode will sacrifice some features on the rest of OnePlus 7 Pro, by heavily focusing the phone into a gaming device.

01.Aggressive CPU Focus, with almost all available resources being concentrated into the game, which dedicates all CPU cores to gameplay
02.Lowest-latency game play, we can’t give you good internet but we can minimize interference from other apps by blocking their network access
03.Nobody wants to be disturbed on their way to a chicken dinner.

Fnatic Mode radically blocks absolutely all calls and notifications. Turning your phone into a gaming machine in the purest sense.

      I hope the above helps!
