iPhone 8 & 8 plus review – The Best Phones in 2017

Let’s look back in 2017, Apple introduced iPhone X with iPhone 8 & 8 plus. People first noticed the innovative design of iPhone X, later people would come back to iPhone 8 & 8 plus and recognize it’s the best phones in 2017.

There are highlights below that iPhone 8 & 8 plus might top iPhone X which are more practical and convenient for some situations.

Let’s get a closer look for iPhone 8 & 8 plus. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Design & Display

In the era of bezel less phone, the top and bottom chin look a bit old. Apple makes iPhone 8 and 8 Plus with glass, and it gives a softer than the previous metal design.

You could choose from silver, gold, grey. I personally prefer the grey color to cover some small scratches that will come out in the future.

The difference of iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 from the outside is really close to nothing, no wonder people were so quiet and indifferent when the real phones were shown on Apple’s keynote.

In the previous year, people used to shout out and applaud towards the new design of iPhones at Apple launch event. Remember?

The gold color might be a plus for China market since Chinese people believe that gold means luck, so it’s a good move to get more users in the Chinese world.

The gold also doesn’t look like true gold in the daylight, it shows pinkish in different angles. I think it’s also something that attracts more female fans. (Pink economy!)

I used to have an iPhone 8 Plus grey color, and my experience is that it won’t get many fingerprints on the back of my iPhone 8 plus.

Sometimes, iPhone looks not that GREAT with lots of fingerprints on the body, but the glass body of iPhone 8 & 8 Plus avoids that.

When iPhone XR first came out last year, there are thousands of comparisons to talk about whether to get the latest model as iPhone XR or the old iPhone 8 plus.

It depends on your needs, I know… Cliché, right?

When it comes to the camera, what I care about is does this camera takes me lots of effort to get a perfect photo? Does it take very long just to finish the software enhancement?

For my true experience, iPhone 8 Plus is really a gem that you don’t need to worry too much for the camera performance, and the photos taken by it look GREAT, but not for night photos.

For night photos, it’s still a long way for Apple.

Compared to other competitors like Google, Samsung or Huawei, Apple’s night photo looks sad.

If you see the comparison of photos that Google uses in the Pixel 3 launch event and later tweets, you would find a huge difference.

Night mode plays a key factor that I decide to switch to Samsung Note 9, with the current Night Mode update, it takes night photo quite well.

Let’s jump back to comparisons between iPhone XR and iPhone 8 Plus, if you look for natural bokeh mode, you might choose an iPhone 8 Plus.

iPhone XR is with a single camera and blurs out the background by software enhancement.

iPhone 8 Plus also gets the super powerful Portrait Mode with iOS 11 updates. One camera takes images and the other camera measures the distance then combines a series of algorithms for the perfect photo.

With iOS 11 update (now, it’s iOS 13), you may choose from “Studio Light” to brighten facial features, “Contour Light” for more dramatic directional lighting, “Stage Light” to isolate your subject in the spotlight, or “Stage Mono” for stage light in a classic black and white.

Let’s watch a video that shows you the Portrait Lighting on iPhone 8 Plus:

And you could swipe between different lights to preview all the effects on your photos, and choose the light most suits your tastes.

Compared to the previous iPhone 7, both iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus get much less noise which makes the photos look better, especially in low-light environments.

The battery for both iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is a tragedy, don’t you reckon?

iPhone 8 is 1,821 mAh and iPhone 8 plus is 2,691 mAh. One thing we could only be grateful is now both iPhone 8 & iPhone 8 plus could support Qi wireless charging.

You just need to put them on a wireless charging pad then it would do the charging work automatically, but the price for a wireless charging pad from Apple starts at USD$59.95 which is very expensive for me.

To be honest, it’s really hard not to compare with the current model ASUS Zenfone 6 is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery which almost triples iPhone 8 and doubles iPhone 8 Plus.

slow charging speed of iphones

(Don’t you feel the charging speed is unbelievably slow on iPhones?)

Touch ID

Touch ID is faster than Face ID, it’s something we cannot skip to discuss.

Since 2013, Touch ID changed the way people use iPhone to unlock your phone, save your passwords, and Apple Pay with your fingerprints.

Its benefits are confirmed and well-accepted by millions of users around the globe.

Compared to Face ID’s lower accuracy and speed, Touch ID does offer you a better choice.

I think the most downside of Face ID is when you could not face the front camera to unlock your phone, you need to change to type in your passwords which takes more time.

But with Touch ID, what you need to do is simply put your finger on the home button and unlock!

Other Downsides

Top#01 the heavyweight of iPhone 8 Plus

You will be surprised the heavyweight of iPhone 8 Plus. The 202-gram-weight is really heavier than you could expect. Usually, the weight of a normal phone ranges from 150 gram to 180 grams.

I know the 20 grams is nothing to mention but on top of 180 grams which reached 200 grams. It’s something!

You will feel it’s quite heavy when you hold it to take a photo without shaking your hands. I am the kind of person who cannot hold my hands still to get a perfect photo, so the weight for me is a BIG issue!

Not to mention that you might need a phone cover to protect your phone, right?

Top#02 Overheating issue

You know when you hold an overheating phone, and you just can’t help but being panic.

Not sure the root cause is from iOS update, the glass body, or some apps that need more CPU to run, such as camera!

Although there are some ways to tell your phone to calm down, it’s best that overheating issue never happens on the smartphones on our hands.

Top#03 Battery Bulges

The third one has something to do with the 2nd one. I think the overheating issue eventually cause the battery bulges.

You don’t need to be an expert to tell the battery is NOT healthy once the battery bulges. In fact, abnormal battery bulges are easy to spot with naked eyes.

There are doubts that Apple might miss some process when designing battery inner layout, so far we don’t have the correct answers about how come our battery is swelling and cracking out from the phone case.

Once you find your iPhone is swelling or to protect your iPhone from getting bulges, there are three ways to avoid it.

Only use Apple’s battery, not the replacement battery from other suppliers!

Don’t overcharge your iPhone too long, especially DO NOT charge overnight.

Charge your iPhones in a dry and cool environment, water and overheated are giant enemies to your battery’s health.

Excluding the downsides, iPhone 8 Plus is always my best phones in 2017! It’s kind of the best design of Apple’s old iPhone with many powerful features. If you look for an iPhone experience, iPhone 8 & 8 Plus will be a good choice and also a good start.

It seems a USD$1,000 flagship phone become normal in 2019, the price of iPhone 8 & 8 Plus will only get lower and lower which is getting better for people are tight in budget.

Don’t miss it today!!!

  2. Thanks for sharing the good and informative review(s).

I have been fixing smartphones (hardware and software issues) since iphone2 was brand new flagship. Have you considered fixing smartphones?

It’s pretty much like fixing computers but everything needs to be done extra precise cause chips and everything is so small. However, thanks for the nice article 🙂

    Kind regards -Jesse

  3. Thanks for another great review for iPhone8 & 8 Plus. You explained everything about these phones in this review very well.

I think 8 plus has more features than 8. As I came to know these both phone set came last year.

Is any other new model have they launched this year? Like Samsung launching their Galaxy note next month, is Apple has any future upcoming launching?
